Anganwadi Workshop For Epilepsy Awareness

During a short one-week survey of the Kutch villages we realized that many of those with epilepsy had no idea that they had epilepsy and even less knowledge that there was treatment available for this. As it would be impossible to educate all of Kutch we decided to use the help of Anganwadi village level para-medical workers to spread the word.

To this end we have been organizing workshops conducted by Dr. Shamim Nathan who is an M.D.Anesthesiologist and qualified counselor. The participants are taken on a journey through the functions of the brain, the cause of epilepsy, its treatment and the do’s and don’t’s. Practical demonstration of how to handle a person getting an actual seizure is with emphasis on not using the traditional methods like onion, chappal, keys etc. The first aid medication (a nasal spray) to be given is shown on a volunteer. Referral to our centre has increased with these workshops.

As Steve Maraboli quoted “A Kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

We believe that the purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference to live life to the fullest.

So, We hope to do more good work for all our epilepsy patients and hope to inspire you all.
